Personality: Yamato's most distinguishing characteristic is his expression; with his slitted eyes and ever-present grin, his face looks like that of a fox. Ichigo derisively nicknames him "fox-face" in their first meeting because of this (in the English dub, he instead replies with a more generalized insult). He also has unusual silver hair. Yamato rarely removes his smile or opens his eyes; his eyes open when he is significantly annoyed or angry. There are only a few times when he opens his eyes: once in a flashback when he and Aizen rescued Momo Hinamori and other students from hollows, and the other during a battle with 10th Division Captain Tōshirō Hitsugaya. His eyes are alternately portrayed as light green/blue,[2] blood red,[3] and yellow.[4] In contrast, there are far more moments when he stops smiling, those usually being lesser degrees of annoyance, genuinely apologetic moments, or in deep contemplation over a sudden epiphany.

Yamato's constant happy façade tends to have the opposite effect on those he meets, making them instantly distrust him. His use of sarcasm only further encourages this, especially in those who have known him for a long time. Rukia comments on how she felt like snakes were wrapping around her neck whenever Yamato spoke, despite the fact that he was speaking to her brother at the time. Kaname Tōsen notes that Yamato has a similar effect on just about everyone when explaining Wonderweiss Margera's frightened reaction to Yamato. Yamato speaks with a distinct Kyoto dialect, which is indirect and polite. His English dubbed voice is also formal and polite, but with a rather mocking and facetious undertone.

History/Background: Yamato was an filthy boy living his life on the streets nothing special, he survived living like an outcast and holding on to the little joy in life, however almost no one ever trusts him, for a good reason yes but still, at any rate at the age of 10 his life comes to an end and this is the story behind Yamato Hozuki. just another fine day it was just like anyday the sun shined upon the small village in Kyoto Japan, at the sight of the sunlight he steps out of his hiding place with nothing more than a few clothes to wear, he was lucky to survive the cold winter those who are weak dont live long enough to tell he though, he went to search for food just about anything would do by now, even moldy bread would be a feast in his eyes, upon reaching the market he glanced around and noticed several dishes being put out, tables filled with food like fruits and fish bread etc... after a sucsessful hunt, he enjoys his meal quietly withouth sharing it with anyone... then as suddenly as he has finished eating he notices something unusual, great footh prints on the ground... at a closer observation it reveals out to be hollow foot prints just a few hours ago it must have passed by here he though, he knew about hollows he was able to see them as long as he could remeber, as well as ghosts... quite frankly he often ingored them, why? because he had no reason to get involved, however this time it was diffrent... the hollow found him in the middle of the street, just as suddenly as he noticed him he came to understand that the hollow was after him, due to his fast reaction he was somehow able to dodge the hollows attack, but he got wounded at the process and limped backwards a few feet before collapsing...

was this it? .... a few moments later he would be dead... but just as the hollow approached him a kindful shinigami stepped in and killed the hollow where it stood by cutting the mask in half, in a slow motion the hollow detoriated into nothingness, Yamato who had never seen a "Death god" before seemed a bit suprised and asked what the old man was doing here? the man aswered that he could call him Hayataro and that he was only doing his job over time the shinigami got close to the little kid, he was almost like a dad to him, off course that event was never to be approved in soul society, a hollow then attacked Hayataro one day, he struggled to fight him off but ended up badly wounded... Yamato who was about 12 by now holded Hayataro close to him, this was the only relation he had ever made, he didnt want him to die, Hayataro smiled, he gave him a chance, Hayataro stabbed his sword into Yamato and released and extreme pressure of reitsu it flooded and surrounded him his appearence changed, he seemed somewhat stronger and older than before, with a single slash he was able to cut the hollow in half however after this scene, Hayataro died soon after leaving behind his powers and his blade, in time he would gain his own Zanpakto, Yamato brought the dead body somehow to soul society, he was confined and was to be executed, however the situation was dire and very diffrent from other cases, Yamato could not return to his body anymore because he lost it during the fight with the hollow, but at the same time gained shinigami powers, Yamato struggled in his cell to fight his inner hollow which had appeared because of these special circumstances.... he won and was released because he was so to say dead....

he got the rights to stay in soul society because of his extremley high spiritual pressure... he fought, he trained, he raised in his ranks and became a Captain in his own right.... he never told or gave any slightest note to his inner hollow.... he was able to seal away its powers until needed...
